Hawks roll in Classic finale T-R Staff Report BERLIN -- After taking out Division I Brookhaven to end the first night of the Classic in the Country V, host Hiland beat on Division II's Hathaway Brown 55-38 to end the weekend Monday night. The Hawks improve to 15-1 on the season and had a strong defensive night, leading 29-20 at halftime and then outscoring Brown 26-18 in the second half. Katelyn Stuckey had a monster game for the winners with 17 points and five rebounds. Hiland also got four other players with seven or more points. Karli Mast tallied 10 points while Mykeila Mast had nine, Jena Stutzman eight and Gabby Fowler seven. Hilary Weaver had five assists and Mykeila Mast a team-high six rebounds as Hiland led the glass battle 35-27. Hiland shot 19 of 42 from the field and 13 of 20 at the free throw line. They held Hathaway Brown to 12 of 42 field goal shooting and 10 of 14 free throw shooting. Alexis Dobbs was the lone Hathaway player in double figures with 14 points. Orrville 32, Garaway 27 BERLIN -- Garaway dropped its game for the second-straight year at the Classic In the Country, falling to Orrville. The Pirates, who lost to Jefferson Area last year, trailed 14-8 at halftime but battled back to 19-16 after three quarters before falling 13-11 in the final eight minutes. Garaway shot 9 of 28 from the field and 7 of 10 at the free throw line while the Red Riders hit on 10 of 25 shots from the floor and 9 of 12 at the charity stripe. Both teams had 18 rebounds and Garaway had just six turnovers to 10 for the winners. DeVonne Howard had 14 points and Libby Ladrach nine points with seven rebounds to lead Orrville. Garaway was paced by Laura Bardall with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Erica Hershberger had seven points. The rest of the team had just seven total points. Canfield 59, West Holmes 48 BERLIN -- Canfield led West Holmes 20-14 after one quarter and 35-27 at halftime en route to an 8-point win. Canfield held West Holmes to 16 of 44 shooting from the field with 6 of 20 from 3-point range and 10 of 12 free throws. The Knights also had 18 turnovers. Canfield shot 22 of 48 from the field with 12 of 22 free throws and a 37-25 rebounding advantage. Kate Popovec had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead the winners and she also added five blocked shots. Bryanne Halfhill chipped in 15 points, Jillian Halfhill 14 and Melissa West 10. West Holmes (13-3) was limited to a pair of double figure scorers in Noelle Yoder (15 points) and Sarah Hammond (12). Hammond also added eight rebounds and three blocks. Charese Scarbrough hit a pair of 3-pointers on her way to eight points as well while Lindsey Arnold had four assists. Sandusky Perkins 50, Shaker Heights 46 BERLIN -- Sandusky Perkins got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Cierra Bravard as they beat Shaker Heights. Perkins shot 16 of 36 from the field and 16 of 25 at the free throw line. Shaker Heights put up 49 shots, making 17 of them with 8 of 17 free throws. Bethany Caudill added nine points and Mallory Mullins eight for Perkins. Shaker Heights was paced by Karisma Penn with 12 points and seven rebounds. Bath 63, Salem 48 BERLIN -- Bath led 34-26 at halftime and outscored Salem 29-22 in the second half en route to beating Salem. The Mauk sisters, Stefanie and Rachel did all the damage for Bath as Stefanie had 22 points and nine rebounds and Rachel added 20 points and six boards. Nicki Hopkins also added 10 points. Salem was led by Amy Scullion with 20 points and eight rebounds while Katie Scullion had 14 points and seven boards and Kelly Roelen 11 points. Bath shot 21 of 55 from the field and 13 of 17 at the line while Salem was held to a solid 19 of 37 from the field and 8 of 10 at the charity stripe. Chaminade-Julienne 59, Bishop McGuinness 53 BERLIN -- Dayton Chaminade-Julienne got 26 points and 16 rebounds from Samarie Walker in a win over Bishop McGuinness out of North Carolina. Walker shot 12 of 22 from the field and 2 of 5 at the free throw line. Teammate Tiera Stephen added 15 points and seven boards with four assists while Shene Fleming added nine points and eight rebounds. Bishop McGuinness tallied 21 points and 12 boards from Erinn Thompson while Brittany Cox had 12 points. Chaminade-Julienne shot 24 of 69 from the field with 9 of 18 free throws. McGuinness was limited to 21 of 57 field goal shooting with 8 of 13 free throws. Lexington Catholic 49, Boardman 41 BERLIN -- Lexington Catholic got a 21-point, 15-rebound performance from Natalie Novosel as they beat Boardman. Catholic hit 19 of 23 free throws and dominated the glass 41-27. Boardman was led by Courtney Schiffauer with 18 points and eight rebounds. |
