Classic in the Country - North Canton claims victory

BERLIN -- Brittany Orban scored 28 points and Jessica Carpenter added 20 as the North Canton Hoover girls' basketball team defeated Lexington 65-60 in the final game of the second day of Classic in the Country V at Hiland High on Sunday.

North Canton, ranked No. 10 in Division I, was tied with Lexington Catholic out of Kentucky 15-15 after the first quarter. Lexington Catholic led 33-30 at the half and the two teams were tied 46-46 entering the final frame.

However, Hoover outscored Lexington Catholic by five for the win.

Natalie Novosel led Lexington Catholic with 23 points.

 

 

Regina 59, Perkins 57

Regina, ranked No. 3 in the state in Division III, outlasted Sandusky Perkins, ranked No. 3 in Division II.

Shay Selby led the winners with 31 points and Emily Hoscilowicz added 12.

Perkins led 11-10 after the first quarter, but Regina held a 26-24 lead at the half. The two teams were tied 39-39 going to the fourth quarter.

Cierra Bravard paced Perkins with 24 points and Trisha Krewson added 17, while Bethany Caudill chipped in 10.

 

Princeton 58, Copley 49

Ariel Thomas scored 18 points, Taylor Howell added 12 and Jayne Cox chipped in 11 as Princeton defeated Copley.

Princeton led 18-6 after the opening quarter, but Copley took a 28-24 lead at the intermission. Copley held a 39-35 lead going to the fourth quarter where it was all Princeton as it outscored Copley 23-10 to secure the win.

Brittany Powell led Copley with 19 points and Taylor Reif added 14, while Beth Mantkowski contributed 11.

 

Winton Woods 48, Reynoldsburg 40

Dayeesha Hollins scored 14 points and Jasmine Shaw added 11 as Cincinnati Winton Woods stopped Reynoldsburg.

Reynoldsburg, guided by former Coshocton boys’ coach Jack Purtell, led 10-8 after the opening quarter.

The two teams were tied at 21-21 at the half and 32-32 going to the final frame where Winton Woods outscored Reynoldsburg by eight for the win.

T’Shera Lucas led Reynoldsburg with 14 points and DeAnna Roundtree added 10.

 

Lakota West 82, Toledo Central Catholic 68

Amber Gray fired in 29 points and Alexis Roger added 20 as Lakota West rolled past Toledo Central Catholic.

Lakota West led 18-16 after the first quarter, but outscored Toledo Central Catholic 22-15 in the second quarter and 22-16 in the third frame to build up a big lead.

Katelyn Nowacki led Toledo Central Catholic with 20 points and Sharise Calhoun added 15, while Brianna Jones contributed 11.

 

Mount Notre Dame 76, Waite 46

Tia McBride scored 29 points and Kendall Hackney and Gabby Smith each added 13 as Mount Notre Dame posted a lopsided win over Waite.

Mount Notre Dame led 20-16 after the opening quarter and 40-29 at the half before outscoring Waite 22-7 in the third quarter and 14-6 in the final frame to roll away to the win.

Natasha Howard led Waite with 11 points and Mariah Hayes added 10.

The Classic will come to a close today and will feature three games with area flavor.

Garaway will battle Orrville at 10 a.m. and West Holmes will take on Canfield at 5 p.m., while host Hiland battles Hathaway Brown at 8:30 p.m. in the final game of the annual showcase.

Other games will include Perkins against Shaker Heights at 11:45 a.m., Lima Bath and Salem at 1:30 p.m., Dayton Chaminade-Julienne and Bishop McGuiness from Kernersville, N.C. at 3:15 p.m. and Lexington Catholic from Lexington, Kentucky and Boardman at 6:45 p.m.
