In the opening game of Classic in the Country II, Mount de Chantal of Wheeling, West Virginia built an early lead and held on to defeat defending Division II state champion West Branch 33-28, Saturday at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center.

Gabrielle Marginean and Ivana Catic paced the Lions with nine points apiece.  West Branch got eight points apiece from Tori Arndt and Stacey Braden.

In the second game, Lakota West freshman sensation Amber Gray lived up to the billing, pumping in 19 points to help the Firebirds run past Wooster 57-38.

Wooster's Michelle LaLonde poured in a game-high 21 points, but the 6-1 junior got little help, as no other General reached double figures.

In the third game, Mifflin downed Winton Woods 56-46, turning up the heat in the fourth quarter and turning a tight contest into a 10-point win.

The one-two punch of Shavonne Jones and Marshae Dotson combined for 38 of Mifflin's points.

Winton Woods star Dai' Tiara Brown struggled from the field, connecting on only one of 14 field goal attempts.  Lesslee Mason-Cox led the Warriors with 20 points.

Game four featured defending state champion Mount Notre Dame and perennial powerhouse Regina.

A 26-12 burst in the second quarter by the Cougars helped Mount Notre Dame to a 77-67 victory.

Regina freshman Shayann Selby led all scorers with 23 points, but the balanced attack of the Cougars Cassie Brannen (18), Michelle Jones (17) and Melissa Bobinski (16) carried the defending state champs to victory.

Brookhaven's Stephanie Foster threw in a buzzer beater from beyond half court to force overtime, but Wadsworth battled back to post a 50-46 triumph in overtime in game five.

A seesaw battle that saw Cincinnati Princeton take an early lead wound up with the Hoover Vikings pulling out a 64-57 victory in an up-tempo game that came down to Hoover's defensive tenacity and their refusal to lose.

Sahar Nusseibeh scored 22 points to pace Hoover, Amber Witt added 14 and Brittany Orban chipped in a dozen.

Brittney Dowdy scored 19 points and grabbed 10 boards to lead Princeton.

The opener of the second day of the Classic in the Country pitted a pair of teams that were winners on Saturday.

Mount de Chantal powered past Lakota West 62-49.

Junior forward Gabrielle Marginean led the Lions with 30 points, Chantelle Handy just missed double figures with nine.

Gray tossed in 20 before fouling out for the Firebirds.  Another of the Firebirds' fantastic freshmen, Quinessa Johnson scored 12 points.

In the mismatch of the weekend, Winton Woods destroyed the Jackson Polar Bears, despite playing without their top scorer, injured Myia McCurdy.

The Warriors jumped out to a huge lead and never looked back en route to a 61-24 triumph.

Mason-Cox led the assault with 18 points and Brown added 12 points and three assists.  Jayne Cox also reached double digits with 10 points.

Jackson's 6-foot freshman Kyle Baumgartner scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench for the Polar Bears.

Sunday's third game matched a pair of elite teams from opposite ends of the state.

The defending state champion Cougars of Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame took on traditional powerhouse Barberton and proved they are still the team to beat in Division I, posting a convincing 64-45 victory over the Magics.

Barberton hung with the Cougars through the first quarter, but a 26-16 spurt in the second quarter opened up a 13-point margin at halftime and Mount Notre Dame rolled from there.

Michelle Jones poured in 23 points on the post while Lee Stephens dropped in three 3-pointers on her way to 15 points to pace the Cougars.

Shana Andrus scored 12 points before fouling out, matching teammate Brittany Mingo for scoring honors for the Magics.

From the opening tip of the Cleveland Central Catholic-Cincinnati Princeton matchup, there was no question which was the dominant team.

Led by the dominant inside presence of senior post Gwen Edwards and 6-4 sophomore Jantel Lavender, along with feisty point guard Ka'Yanna Feaster, the Lady Ironmen took it to the Vikings early and often and rolled to a 65-36 victory.

Edwards paced the winners with 18 points, Lavender scored 12 points and added 11 rebounds.  Feaster scored eight points and dished out eight assists.

Princeton got 21 points from the Dowdy twins, Brittney leading the way with 13.

In game 12, Dover had plenty of fan support and got a great game from Natalie Miller, but Holy Name came away with a 65-58 triumph over the Tornadoes.

Miller poured in 32 points but Dover was unable to overcome the six-point hump they trailed the Green Wave by from early in the second quarter.

Sarah McRobie dropped in a couple of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter pulling Dover within two points with just over three minutes to play.

But Holy Name held on thanks to the trio of Rachael Quiring, who led the Green Wave with 19 points, Kaitie Fulkerson, who added 18 and Amanda Mondrach, who scored 17.

Sunday's nightcap was a fast-paced affair, a game that went up and down the court with a flurry.

Unfortunately for Dayton Dunbar, the high-flying Falcons did most of the scoring in a 70-43 romp.

Lindsey Gaut and Carrie Winters provided the one-two punch for Fairless.  Gaut led the way with 19 points and Winters chipped in with 16.

Brittney Weaver paced the Wolverines with 17.

Day three at the Classic in the Country II started out with a couple of close contests.

Jonathan Alder overcame a four-point halftime deficit to post a 48-39 triumph over Hathaway Brown.

Alder's 6-foot sophomore Lauren Prochaska led the way with 20 points.  Aleashia Wood and Jessie Adams chipped in nine and eight points respectively to provide balance for the Pioneers.

Tiffany Tyree led the Blazers with 15.

In the second game on Monday, number 15 on the weekend, River View rode the strength of Kristin Daugherty's 14 points and 12 rebounds to a 35-24 triumph over the Tigers of Jackson Center.

Catie Halberstadt led Jackson Center with 10 points.

State power Regina flexed its muscle against Canfield, powering past the Cardinals 78-33.

Four different players scored in double digits to lead the Royals.  Freshman Shayann Selby led the way with 17.  Kalynne Proctor scored 16, Carla Jacobs 15 and Monique Godfrey added 10.

Canfield freshman Kate Popovec paced the Cardinals with 11 points and eight rebounds.

In the closest contest of the weekend, North Canton Hoover upset nationally-ranked Chaminade-Julienne 59-55.

Hoover's balance and tenacious defense enabled the Vikings to offset the Eagles' big three of Aisha Jefferson (16 points), Maria Getty (18) and Lindsey Goldsberry (12).

Sahar Nusseibeh paced the Vikings with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Amber Witt added 14 and seven assists.  Brittany Orban added 12 points and seven boards.

The Boardman Spartans supplied the second shocker of the day when they handed previously undefeated Cleveland Central Catholic its first loss of the season, defeating the Lady Ironmen 39-32.

Boardman's defensive pressure denied Central Catholic from pounding the ball into 6-4 Jantel Lavender, holding the high-scoring sophomore to nine points.

April Melquist and Jessica Moore provided the one-two punch for the Spartans, scoring 14 and 10 points respectively.
