Classy tourney -- classic hoops By KEVIN LYNCH Local hoops fans and fans from around the state were treated to a spectacular event over Martin Luther King weekend, as Hiland hosted the inaugural "Classic in the Country" girls basketball showcase, featuring some of the state's best teams and athletes. The event, which had previously been held at Pickerington High School, was extremely well-received by the public and more importantly for a successful return to Hiland High School next year, by the players, coaches and scouts who permeated the Perry Reese Memorial Fieldhouse to watch 20 games over the three-day weekend. "This was the most first-class run operation I've ever been a part of," said Copley head coach Steve Coon. "Berlin did a great job in every aspect of it. They did a great job of communicating with us; they had a host to meet us at the door; they had great competition -- we got exactly what we wanted out of this weekend. "I can't say enough about the event." "It's absolutely great," said Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame head coach Scott Rogers. "This was just a first-class operation run by very caring people who took the time to do it the right way. "There is just no comparison between this event and the one at Pickerington." It was a weekend of topnotch basketball at a first-class facility. Perhaps this is a mixed metaphor, but in this case, the inaugural "Classic in the Country" was a home run. |
