It's Classic Time

By JEFFERY WILLIAMS

Several area teams will be participating in high-profile basketball events this weekend as the Classic in the Country for girls takes place at Hiland, while the Dover and Hiland boys' teams travel to North Canton for the Maytag Hoover Classic.

The two events will benefit the Perry Reese Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund as well as North Canton's habitat for Humanity.

At Hiland, Dover's girls open up with Dayton Dunbar at 11:45 am Saturday while the host Hawks take on Marion Local at 8:30 pm.

On Sunday, Fairless takes on Cleveland Villa Angela - St Joseph's at noon. and West Holmes will battle Dunbar at 5:15 pm.

On Monday, River View meets Olentangy Liberty at 3:!5 while Hiland faces Copley to round out the weekend at 8:30.

At Hoover High School, Dover's boys will face Division I GlenOak at 6 pm Saturday with Hiland battling Sebring McKinley at 2 pm on Monday.

Hiland coach Dave Schlabach, who has been tirelessly working on the event for the past year along with many Hiland community members, said that he's happy about the local flavor.

"We have a lot of local teams that are really playing well right now," Schlabach said.  "We're very happy with the area teams that are being represented and we hope to keep that local  flavor every year that we have this event here."

Dover's girls are currently 12-0 while Fairless is 8-1 after losing to Division I Perry on Tuesday.  West Holmes is 7-5, with four of those losses coming in the very tough Ohio Cardinal Conference while Hiland is 9-0.

River View is much improved as well with a 10-2 mark under first-year head coach Caroline Daugherty.

Schlabach added that he's excited about getting the weekend going.

"The planning has been gonig on for a year now and we've had a tremendous amount of help from the community.  We're really looking forward to it.  This is a special thing for our community to host all of these great teams and great players.

"We have 150 college coaches who have already contacted us from places like UCLA, Kentucky, Florida State.  There's a lot of excitement with so many great teams coming here.  I think that it's gonig to be a great weekend for girls' basketball."

Schlabach added that Hiland will host the event indefinitely.

"I think that after we get this initial year under our belt it's going to be even bigger and even better," he said.  "A week after this classic we will bring out next year's schedule and get started for next year."
